Baking safely

Little bakers, with an adult beside them
These activities are intended for children aged 4–10 with active adult supervision. Read the recipe and equipment instructions before starting, and choose tasks that suit the child's abilities. An adult should handle ovens, hot trays, sharp tools, hot liquids and equipment the child cannot use safely. Keep children away from hot surfaces and make sure equipment is stable.
Ingredients and allergies
Check every ingredient label, including decorations, toppings and substitutions, each time you buy or use it. Recipes can contain common allergens, and a substitution does not make a recipe allergy-free. Avoid contact between allergens and other ingredients, utensils and surfaces. Follow the dietary and allergy advice already provided for anyone who will eat the food.
Read Food Standards Australia New Zealand's information about allergens.
Clean hands and cooked treats
Wash hands before preparing food and after handling raw ingredients. Use clean utensils and work surfaces. Do not taste raw dough or batter, and cook the recipe as directed. Follow ingredient labels for safe storage, including keeping foods that need refrigeration chilled.
